Chanukkah 1932 Kiel, Germany

At sundown tonight, December 6th, we will light the first candle of Chanukkah. This picture was taken in 1932 in the city of Kiel, Germany, just a month before the Nazi party rose to power. This ‘chanukkiah’ (9 branched menorah) stood in the window of the home of Rabbi Akiva Baruch Pozner, directly across from of the Nazi headquarters in Kiel. His wife Rachel took the picture, and wrote on the back of it “Their flag calls for the death of Judah, but Judah will survive, and our light will overpower their flag”

Chag sameach Chanukkah! Happy Chanukkah!
